A young man leaves a Czech village and crosses occupied Europe to reach Britain and fly with the RAF. Underneath his journey runs a voiceover of two teenagers today, talking about what they would do if a war started here. Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, that conversation is the point of the film.
The score had to carry both. A relentless rhythmic pulse runs under the whole spot: the machinery of war, the tread of marching infantry. Above it, from the very first bar, a string pattern is already alive, joined later by a piccolo trumpet and a bass synth. Their harmony rises where the pulse only drives, and that upward pull is the film's real subject.
